Goldmann, Nahum
(1895-1982)
   American stat-esman and Zionist leader. He was born in Lithuania and was taken to Germany as a child. In 1925 he helped to found the Eshkol publishing house in order to produce the Encyclopaedia Judaica. Together with Stephen Samuel Wise, he organized the World Jewish Congress in 1936; he became chairman of its executive board and later its president. He was also president of the Zionist Organization. He played an important role in negotiating the repara-tions agreement with Germany after World War II. In 1962 he left the US and became an Israeli citizen.
